Make your service design playful

Do you enjoy doing your net banking or your tax return? Who says such services need to be so boring? In this workshop we get help from researchers from the games group at the IT University of Copenhagen and from practitioners from i.e. Mobile Pay to redesign applications for a more playful outcome.
Playful design is a collection of methods that focus on redesigning applications and services to feel more playful. This playful attitude increases user retention, while it makes the user experience more pleasurable and memorable. Playful design is not gamification. In fact, it goes beyond gamification: it deploys a number of techniques from game design, toy design, and interaction design, to create experiences that go beyond badges and points. Playful design allows for more joyful experiences of the everyday.
In this workshop we will introduce the different methods of playful design with the goal of allowing participants to identify the possibilities that these methods afford to their different interests. The goal of the workshop is to give the participants both a theoretical and practical understanding of playful design.
The workshop will start with a presentation of the different concepts and methods behind playful design by using existing cases from the financial sector, both public and private, as examples of applications of these methods. The workshop will then move to a practical setup in which the participants, guided by the workshop facilitators, will try their hand at designing playable experiences for their products.
If you are a hands-on UX designer or if you are an executive working strategically with the design of systems, this workshop aims at providing you with new insights and experiences in how to redesign your services in more playful ways, which may increase the satisfaction of your customer.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have an understanding of the possibilities that playful design has for turning services and applications from mundane chores to joyful, playful experiences.
This workshop is organized in collaboration with Miguel Angel Sicart and Martin Pichlmair who are both associate professors at the Games Groups at the IT University of Copenhagen.
