Gamifying experience-based innovation

Invio has, in collaboration with the company Gametools, developed a new board game named Concept Captain. Concept Captain is a board game designed specifically for Invio to be used during workshops and interactive matchmaking sessions. The board game is designed to improve concept development of existing or new products and services through generating ideas on how to develop the product/service in a more experience-based direction.

In the game, the product/service is challenged with 3, 6, 9, or 12 different aspects of experience-based innovation, which are based on state-of-the-art research within experience-based innovation and business development. Each aspect is designed as a piece of the board game, and when the given product lands on the given piece, the product will be challenged with questions related to the specific aspect of experience-based innovation.

The overall goal of this process is to test and challenge the product or service from an experience-based perspective, which in return will improve the value of the product. Furthermore, Concept Captain can be used as a matchmaking tool to explore different players (stakeholders) interests, services, strengths and weaknesses in potential collaboration on innovation projects. Thus, the board game is an obvious tool to use in workshops as an alternative to the more traditional workshop methods.

Concept Captain was developed in close collaboration with Roskilde University, The Danish Technological Institute, and Aalborg University to ensure high international level of research was applied. The company Game Tools added their great experience in game-design and game-concepts to the process.
